BLDG371 Assign#1

This document contains 6 problems related to building service systems. Problem 1 asks to estimate the cubic feet of natural gas and heating bill for heating a house at 70°F with a boiler that has a combustion efficiency of 0.78. Problem 2 asks to determine the number of baseboard heaters needed for the same house assuming a 20°F temperature difference and using the provided baseboard rating equation. Problem 3 provides boiler test data and asks to calculate the thermal efficiency. Problems 4-6 ask to compute lost head in a pipe run, heat loss from insulated pipe, and actual heat rating of a finned tube heater installed at a different height than recommended.

BLDG 371/4 V Building Service Systems

Assignment # 1 Due Jan. 27, 2015

Dr. Zaheeruddin
1. A natural gas-fired boiler with a combustion efficiency of 0.78 was used to heat a house in Montreal.
Assume design heat loss rate of the house equal to 50000BH. Although the design temperature was
68F, the house was maintained at 70F throughout the heating season. Estimate the ft3 of natural gas
required over the heating season. At $6/1000 ft3, what is the heating bill that you would expect?
2. Determine the number of 4 long baseboard heater required for the house in Problem 1. Assume a T
of 20F between supply and return water temperatures. The BH rating of the baseboard radiators can
be obtained from the following equation:

BH

ft length

740 12GPM 1

How many 4 long baseboards will be needed using the baseboard data handout given in the class?
3

The following data was recorded on a natural gas-fired boiler during a 5 minute ON cycle and 10
minute OFF cycle test.
a) natural gas consumption rate: 1.2 cuft/min
b) boiler temperature: 180 F (assume constant)
c) heat loss coefficient of the boiler surfaces: 10 BTU/hF
d) boiler is located in basement where the air temperature recorded was: 65F
e) neglect losses from tubing
f) heat loss rate in flue gases: 10400 BTU/h (constant)
g) off cycle heat loss rate is given by 75e at BTU / min . Where, a=0.1 and t is time in minutes
Determine the thermal efficiency of the boiler.

4. Compute the lost head for a 150 ft run of standard pipe having a diameter of 3 inch. The pipe run has
3 standard 90 degree elbows, a globe valve and a gate valve. One hundred GPM of water flows in the
pipe.
5. Find the heat loss from a 360 ft of 3 inch schedule 40 steel pipe covered with 1 inch thick plastic
insulation (foamed plastic). Hot water temperature in the pipe is at 215F and ambient
temperature is 65F.
6. A commercial finned-tube heater is rated at 1320 BH/ft with a recommended installed height of
16 inch. The unit is actually installed at 26 inch. Water flows at 2 fps (ft/sec) and water
temperature is 180 F. Determine the actual heat rating using the data given in the handouts for
commercial finned-tube radiators.
