Grade 10 Mathlesson

This lesson plan introduces students to quadratic relations through graphing transformations of the parent function x^2. Students are divided into groups, each graphing a different quadratic function like 2x^2 or (x+2)2. They analyze how their graph compares to the parent function. Key terms like parabola, vertex, and axis of symmetry are defined. Students also work with the standard form of a quadratic relation to find patterns in first and second differences. Assessment includes homework, tests, and quizzes. The goal is for students to understand quadratic graphs and transformations.

LESSON PLAN

St. Anne Catholic High School: Practicum #1, October 2014

Subject: Grade 10 math
Duration: 72 minutes
Lesson Topic: Introduction to Quadratic relations
By the end of the class, the students should be able to:
1. Understand what the general form of a quadratic relation looks like, and
compare it to linear relations that they learned in the past.
2. Define the terms parabola, vertex, and axis of symmetry
3. Transform the parent function x^2 so that it shifts to the right, left, up or down
as well as vertical compression and stretching
Resources: graph x^2 on the whiteboard
Introductory Activity:
We will begin by graphing the parent function x 2 on the whiteboard. A table of
values will be used, and the points will be plotted on a graph. We will discuss how
this differs from any graph we learned before.
Divide students into six groups. Give each group one of the following functions:
2x2
0.5x2
-2x2
x2 - 2
(x + 2)2
(x-2)2
2
Have each person graph their function on a graph, along with x . They can
chose to work individually, or with other members in their group.
Instruct them to construct a table of values, chose x domain of {-3,3} for all
except the (x+h) and (x-h) transformations, where they would instead use
domain {-5,1} and {-1,5}
After working on it for several minutes, have a member from each group
describe their findings. How does their graph compare to x 2?
Development Strategies:

Define the following terms on the whiteboard, with examples for each
o parabola - the graph of a quadratic relation. It is U shaped and
symmetrical
o vertex - the point on a quadratic relation where the curve changes
direction. For a graph that opens up, this is a minimum. For a graph
that opens down, this is a maximum. (explain with diagram)
o axis of symmetry - a line that divides a figure into two congruent parts

standard form of a quadratic relation y = ax2+bx+c - explain the

meaning of a, b, and c

Give students an example of an equation in standard form. Have them come

up with a table of x/y values. Have them find the first differences, and the
second differences, and see what they find.

Differentiated Instruction Strategies:

Give student the option to work in groups or individually with the quadratic relation
they receive
Culminating Activity:
Students can use the remaining time to complete assigned homework from their
textbook, as the teacher will go around answering individual questions the students
might have. (pg 172, 1-3 , 5, pg 178 4, 6-9)
Evaluation methods:
This material will be on the test and possibly quizzes. The homework questions may
be checked for a homework grade in the next class.

graph provided below.
