Pre - Visit Lesson 1

This 5th grade science lesson introduces students to the three major sections of the brain: the brain stem, cerebellum, and cerebrum. This lesson will activate students prior knowledge of the brain as well as introduce them to the
three major sections of the brain:
1. Brain Stem
2. Cerebrum
3. Cerebellum
Students will know each parts name, where it is located, and what it is responsible for.

Simple Diagram of the brain
Model Magic
K-W-L Chart
Assessment:
- K-W-L Chart: Assesses both prior knowledge and what students have learned
- Class discussion: Assess whether students are grasping the concepts
- Successfully creating clay model of the brain

Explain to the
students that the brain is very
complex and intricate.
Scientists learn new things
about the brain everyday.
On the smartboard,
display simple diagram of the
brain. Tell the students that
there are three major sections
of the brain. Talk about each
section and come up with
examples from everyday life
-brain stem
- cerebellum
- cerebrum
Students will come up
to the smart board and drag
three labels to identify each
area of the brain

Each students will receive yellow,
blue, and red model magic clay.
Using the simple diagram on the
board and a teacher example to guide
them, student will create their own
