English - Yr 8 - Unit 2 - LA Task - Short Story Study

We are studying short stories instead of a novel for this assignment. We will analyze the short stories using the same techniques we would for a novel, examining the characters, setting, theme, message, and narrative structure. Students must read two stories and complete accompanying study questions, write a 200-300 word review of another story analyzing the characters, setting, plot elements, and can offer their opinion on whether they liked the story and why or why not. The assignment also includes writing a reflection on the short stories.

Novel Study Assignment

We are not studying a novel but we are studying some short stories. We will be
looking at them in the same way we would study a novel. We will be looking at the
following key points of any novel: character, setting, theme, message and narrative
structure.

Element ONE:
Read any TWO of the stories in ‘A Sting in the Tale’ and complete the accompanying
study section questions for each. (photocopies of the grids from the book shall be
provided.)

Review:
Read any other story (not those already studied) and write review of between 200 and
300 words.
Look at the following key points of any novel:
character, setting, theme, message and narrative structure.

Your task is to comment on the following:-

Characters - Protagonist, Antagonist
Setting – time and place.
Orientation
Complication
Climax
Resolution

Opinionative writing:
Did you like the story? If ‘yes’ then why? If ‘no’ then why not?
For example, was the story itself interesting? Did the resolution make sense?
Were the characters and their actions believable? Was the story itself believable?
Was it meant to be?

Element TWO:
Reflection

Don’t forget to give examples. The more

detail, the greater the evidence that you
have understood and thought about it…
