Great Universal Writers
Topic 3

Endings and Beginnings

The time period of the dominance of the

Greek and the Latin (Roman) cultures is

know as the Antiquity or the Classical Age.
It came to an end in the V century with the
gradual disintegration of the Roman Empire
and the forming of different Kingdoms
throughout Europe.

The Middle Ages

After the Romans, different Lords took siege

of the lands and stablished fiefs, large

territories governed by their Lords, who
offered allegiance to the King. Lords had
vassals, lower tier people, heads of Houses,
that helped governing and protecting the
fief. And lastly, there were the peasants,
workers and farmers that lived in the fief.
The Lord offered them protection and
freedom within his domain in exchange for
taxes and other royalties.

The Crusades
At the same time, The Church, the most

powerful remain of the Roman Empire,

started the Crusades, a military campaign
that aimed to protect the Holy Sites,
Jerusalem in particular, from the nonchristians or infidels, Muslims and Jewish.
Purity of faith was the main motive, but of
course it was also trying to siege important
business and political centers.

Literary Analysis (Cont.)

Up until this point, weve talked about two

elements of the Literary Analysis: Story and

Theme.

Description
Another important element is the

Description. Like the name suggests, it is

the way in which the characters, places,
objects and actions are represented
through the text.

Plot
Its how the Story is presented to the

readers. The Story is always chronological,

but the Plot is the order in which the
actions are told. Some authors prefer not to
tell what happened in the beginning, or to
start the narration in the middle of the
action, in order to create tension or prepare
for a surprising revelation.

Thematic lines
After we have figured out what is the

theme or themes in a single narration, then

we can link it with other stories that have
similar themes. When different novels,
movies, comic books, games, etc. follow
the same theme or idea, that is called a
Thematic Line.
