Top Down Assembly: by Baldemar Garcia and Luis Dominguez

This document discusses top down assembly, which involves creating an object and all its components in a single process by first constructing the main part to use as a reference for the other components. Some advantages are better placement control and dimensions are created automatically, while disadvantages include complicated steps and changes automatically updating all references. The process begins by starting a new top down assembly and inserting components by creating solids and features, then choosing reference planes and sketches to build additional parts as single features. A combination of top down and bottom up assembly may be most effective.

Top Down Assembly

By Baldemar Garcia
And Luis Dominguez

Top Down Assembly

consists in creating an object and all its
components in just one long process.
starts by constructing the main part which
will be used as a reference to make the
rest.
when finished all the components will
appear as if they had been created
individually.

Disadvantages
Complicated steps to create a piece.
Difficulty in making changes to references
in assembly.
All references are automatically changed
when a piece is modified.
It is suggested to start with the biggest
component and plan accordingly.

Advantages
Better view and control of placement.
Insertions can be done to create a
piece/assembly.
Pro Engineer create dimensions for the
user.
The user chooses the reference planes.

To begin
Begin a Top Down
Assembly by going to

new > assembly.

To start with the
creation of a piece go
to insert >

component >
create > solid >
name of piece |
create features.

Click on part and solid click ok. Then click on

create features.

2nd step
Next step is to
choose the
sketch and the
reference planes.
To create a part
follow the regular
method.

Other Parts
To continue working with the rest of the
components, it is necessary to activate the
window. This way every part of the
assembly will be treated as a single
feature.
To create the rest of the parts always start
by insert > assembly > create.

Advice
Make use of tools learned previously.
For example, the shell and extrude
tool were used.

Follow the same process to create the rest

of the components using your knowledge
in Pro-E.

Top Down Assembly

Top Down and Bottom Up
Assembly can be used
simultaneously to perform
better in the creation of
objects.
