Imo Modu Code

The IMO MODU Code provides intact stability criteria for mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs) under normal and severe storm conditions. For severe storms, a wind speed of 100 knots perpendicular to the unit is applied. The area under the righting moment curve up to the second intercept or downflooding angle must be at least 40% greater than the area under the wind heeling moment curve. Additionally, the righting moment curve must remain positive over the entire range of angles from upright to the second intercept to meet the criteria.

IMO MODU Code

Ref [3] IMO MODU Code - Ch.3, Sec.3.3. Intact Stability Criteria
The MODU Code is a complement to the IMO A.749 resolution.
For normal operating conditions, a wind velocity of 70 knots is applied to the vessel, from
any direction relative to the unit. For severe storm conditions, a wind velocity of 100 knots
is applied.
Conservatively, the severe storm conditions are applied, namely:
100 knots wind speed.
Perpendicular incidence to the lateral area.
Sec 3.3.1.1.
The area under the righting moment curve to the second intercept or down-flooding
angle, whichever is less, should be not less than 40% in excess of the area under the
wind heeling moment curve to the same limiting angle.

Area ( A B )
1.4 see figure -1
Area ( B C )
Sec 3.3.1.3.
The righting moment curve should be positive over the entire range of angles from upright
to the second intercept.
A MODU Code typical curve is illustrated below:
