EE220 Economic Operations Exam 2

This document provides the data for a 5-bus power system, including line parameters and generator characteristics, to formulate an optimal power flow problem. It also presents the unit commitment problem data for a 5-unit power system over a 4 time period horizon, asking to find the optimal schedules both while ignoring and considering minimum up/down times using dynamic programming.

2. The table below represents the unit characteristics and load pattern for a five-unit, four-time-period
problem. Each time period is 2 hours long. The input-output characteristics are approximated by a
straight line from min to max generation, so that the incremental heat rate is constant. Unit noload and start-up costs are given in terms of heat energy requirements.

Find the optimum unit commitment schedules covering the 8-hour period for the following conditions
using Dynamic Programming.
a. Ignore min/max down and up times
b. Consider up and down times
