Free Vibration of Single-Degree-Of-Freedom Systems: Week 6

The document discusses natural frequencies of single-degree-of-freedom systems including the effect of spring mass and column mass on natural frequency. It also covers Rayleigh's Energy Method and using it to find natural frequencies. Additional topics include damped free vibrations with underdamped, critically damped, and overdamped cases as well as logarithmic decrement and its use in characterizing damping.

Natural frequencies of single-degree-of-freedom system.

The principle of conservation of energy, in the context of
an undamped vibrating system, can be restated as
T1 + U1 = T2 + U2
Where 1 & 2 represents two different instants
If displacement=0 at 1 and velocity=0 at 2
T1 + 0 = 0+ U2
Tmax = Umax
The application of the above equation is called
Rayleighs Energy method

Directly gives the natural freq. of the system
