Accelerometer: Prepared by 10BME055 10BME058

An accelerometer is a device that measures acceleration forces, both static forces like gravity and dynamic forces caused by movement or vibration. Accelerometers can be used to determine the tilt angle of a device relative to Earth by measuring static acceleration from gravity, or to analyze how a device is moving by sensing dynamic acceleration. Common types include resistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and those using microstructures. Accelerometers have applications in vehicles, cameras, phones, industry, and seismology to measure factors like shock, vibration, tilt, motion, and seismic activity.

Accelerometer
An accelerometer is an electromechanical device that measures

acceleration forces.
These forces may be static, like the constant force of gravity

pulling at your feet, or they could be dynamic - caused by moving

or vibrating the accelerometer.

What are accelerometers useful for?

By measuring the amount of static acceleration due to gravity, we

can find out the angle the device is tilted at with respect to the
earth.
By sensing the amount of dynamic acceleration, we can analyze

the way the device is moving.

Common Accelerometer Types

Resistive

Strain Gauge
Piezoresistive
Micromachined
Thin-Film

Capacitive
Fiber Optic
Servo or Force Balance
Vibrating Quartz
Piezoelectric

Working principle of Accelerometer

Some accelerometers use the piezoelectric effect - they contain microscopic
crystal structures that get stressed by accelerative forces, which causes a
voltage to be generated.
Another way to do it is by sensing changes in capacitance. If you have two
microstructures next to each other, they have a certain capacitance between
them. If an accelerative force moves one of the structures, then the
capacitance will change.
Add some circuitry to convert from capacitance to voltage, and will get an
accelerometer. There can be many methods, including use of the piezo
resistive effect, hot air bubbles, and light.

Applications of Accelerometers
Used in cars to study shock and vibrations.
Camcorders use accelerometers for image stabilization.
Still cameras use accelerometers for anti-blur capturing.
Used in mobile phones for multiple functions including tilt detection,

motion detection..etc.
Process control systems and safety installations in industries.
Used to measure seismic activity, inclination, machine vibration, dynamic

distance and speed with or without the influence of gravity.
