Cee5324 hw1 sp12 PDF

This homework assignment has three parts that involve unit hydrograph concepts and linear programming. The first part involves plotting a unit hydrograph and using it to convolve rainfall to obtain a runoff hydrograph. The second part requires determining the area under a gamma unit hydrograph and using it to obtain ordinates for a larger watershed. The third part involves solving two linear programs with different objective functions to maximize a value subject to inequality constraints, and explaining the different optimal solutions.

CEE 5324 Advanced Hydrology
Homework #1: Unit Hydrograph Fundamentals/Linear Programming Experience
Due: January 30, 2012
(10 points)
This first homework presents a couple of exercises to reinforce the fundamentals
of unit hydrograph concepts and one exercise to provide a first experience with a linear
programming.
1. (4 points) Given a 5.3 square mile watershed. When the watershed is subjected to a
spatially and temporally uniform rainfall with 30 minute duration, the hydrograph that
results has the following relative proportions:

a. Before doing any calculations, indicate nPe, nUH, and nRO as defined in class
during lecture. Please make sure your answers below are consistent with these
numbers.
b. Plot the unit hydrograph for this watershed (vertical axis should be in ft3/(s-in),
horizontal axis should be time in minutes).
c. Use the hydrograph from 1a and convolute with the storm shown below to
determine the direct runoff hydrograph from this watershed for this storm. Please
note, the storm below is precipitation, not precipitation excess. First use a index value of 0.25 in/hr to determine precipitation excess.

2. (4 points) Given a Gamma unit hydrograph with functional form shown below. Let
1

1 t
q(t )

k( ) k

e t / k

= 3.47 and k = 0.83 hours, where q(t) is in units of hours-1.

a. Numerically integrate q(t) from t=0 to t=. What is the area under this curve?
Please indicate if this makes sense based on unit hydrograph theory.
b. Determine the ordinates arising from this GIUH if you plan to employ the
resulting a unit hydrograph with rainfall at hourly intervals for a 9.7 mi2
watershed. Please structure your answer so that you follow the 6 steps
outlined during class lecture.
3. (2 points) Linear programming primer: Consider the following linear program:
Max: 2x + y;
x + y <= 40;
x + 2y >= z; (see below for z values)
y >= 0;
x >= 0;
a. Plot the feasible region for the above linear program if z = 60 and if z = 61.
b. Use the solver at: http://algos.inesc.pt/lp/ to optimize the
objective function for both z = 60 and z = 61.
i.
Report objective function value, x, and y for z = 60.
ii. Report objective function value, x, and y for z = 61.
c. Explain why the results in part b are different for these two values of z.
d. What is the largest value of z that still has a feasible solution?
e. Before next class period, read the posted PDF at the class Scholar page from
Chow et al. text describing the application of linear programming to the leastsquares unit hydrograph.
