According to Robert Sternberg's triangular theory of love, love is composed of three elements: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy involves bonding and emotional support between partners. Passion refers to romance, attraction, and sexual fulfillment. Commitment has short-term aspects like the decision to love someone, and long-term aspects like maintaining that love. Sternberg proposes that love can be classified into eight types depending on which elements are present, such as liking (intimacy only), romantic love (intimacy and passion), and consummate love (all three elements).

Notes for Psychology Presentation: Dating & Marriage

Sternbergs Triangular Love Scale (Triangular Theory of Love)

According to Robert Sternbergs theory, love is composed of 3 elements: passion, intimacy and
commitment.
Intimacy is the bonding feel when you love someone. Its when you give and receive emotional
support from each other, communicate about intimate things, and value the other person being
in your life.
Passion refers to the elements of romance and attraction in a relationship. Its fueled by the
desire to increase self-esteem, to be sexually active or fulfilled, to affiliate with others, to
dominate, or to subordinate.
Commitment is broken into 2 parts: short term and long term

Short-term refers to the decision that you love someone. This usually occurs before you
decide to make a commitment to that person.
The commitment represents the long-term aspect. Its the maintenance of love.

According to Sternberg these 3 components can be combined in 8 different ways, creating

different types of ways to classify love.
