Protective Circuits (Power-On Delay) : Presented by

This document describes a protective circuit device that delays power from being reapplied to compressor-type appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners after a power outage. The device uses a programmable unijunction transistor and SCR that are triggered by a charging capacitor to delay power for an adjustable period of time after power is restored, preventing damage to compressors if power is immediately restored before system pressure can equalize.

OBJECTIVE:
To be able to construct a device that
protects compressor type appliances such
as refrigerator and air-conditioning unit
from sudden power outage.

PROJECT DETAIL:

When electricity supplied to a compressor is
removed and then immediately reapplied before
the compressor system pressure can be
equalized, as during power outages, the
compressor can be damaged.
This project is designed to automatically delay
the power supplying the compressor type
appliance when a sudden power outage occurs.
SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM:
HOW DOES IT WORK?
2N6028 is a programmable unijunction
transistor, capacitor C2 charges through
resistor R1 and when the anode-to-cathode
voltage reaches and is greater than the
gate-to-cathode voltage the 2N6028 is
turned on and triggers the SCR C106B. The
time is adjusted by playing with the values
of C2, R1, R2 and R3.
