Pressure Measurement: Potentiometer

A potentiometer is a variable resistor that can adjust the amount of current in a circuit by manually varying its resistance value. It works by having two resistive strips - one made of carbon that allows resistance to vary, and one conductive strip that carries current. Originally, potentiometers were used to measure unknown voltages by tapping off fractions of a known voltage and comparing readings with a galvanometer. Important parameters are its resolution, or smallest resistance increment recorded, and its linearity in how resistance changes with position. Potentiometers are commonly used as volume knobs in audio equipment or to regulate fan speed.

GENERAL FUNCTION
What Is Potentiometer?
Potentiometer is a small sized electronic component whose
resistance can be adjusted manually by increasing or decreasing the
value of resistance controls the amount of current flowing in a
circuit.
How They Works?
Potentiometer has two strips made on it resistive and
conductive. Resistive strip is made of carbon and is
responsible for potentiometers resistance variance feature.
Conductive strip helps the potentiometer to carry the current
into the circuit in accordance with the resistance.
SPECIFIC FUNCTION OF
POTENTIOMETER
A potentiometer is a variable resistor that can be
used as a voltage divider.
Originally a potentiometer was an instrument to
measure the potential (or voltage) in a circuit by
tapping off a fraction of a known voltage from a
resistive slide wire and comparing it with the
unknown voltage by means of a galvanometer.
Important Performance Parameters of
the Potentiometers

1) Potentiometer resolution:
Though the resistance of the conductor is proportional to
its length, when the slider moves over the wire the change
in the resistance is not continuous function of the contact
movement. The smallest increment of the slider that can be
recorded across the whole length of the potentiometer is
called as the resolution.
2) Potentiometer linearity:
Ideally the resistance measured between the fixed point
and the slider point is linear function of the contractor
position relative to that end. In actual cases the change in
resistance and the distance between the fixed and the
moving point is never linear.

The potentiometer is used in various
electronics, for example: is used as volume
knob in music systems, as fan regulators etc.
