Completed Staff Work

Definition
Completed Staff Work is management's expectation regarding your responsibilities in solving problems
related to your work assignment.
Completed staff work is the study of a problem and the presentation of a solution in such form that all that
remains to be done by your supervisor is to approve or reject the recommendation and work product.
When Used
All business problems and issues should be handled in this manner.
Purpose
The purpose of completed staff work is to ensure problems are worked at the appropriate staff level. It is
your responsibility to advise management on what should be done since you are the subject matter expert.
Your job is to study, write and edit until you have developed a single proposed action that is the best
solution.
Important
You may need to consult your mentor, other process experts or your supervisor to ensure
that you have the knowledge you need to solve the problem. You may also want to do a
rough draft that is complete but may not be in final presentation form and review it with
your supervisor before you finalize it.
Work Product
The work product should be in final form so that it is ready to be implemented. It should be clearly written
with correct grammar and no misspelled words. It may take the form of:
memo/letter to be signed by your supervisor
presentation package
proposal stating your solution with backup and asking for your supervisor's approval to proceed
document/meeting proposing several choices or solutions with your recommendations on the best
one
Steps
Follow these steps to solve your problems using the Completed Staff Work concept:
1. Identify the problem
2. Research and educate yourself on all topics you need to understand the full scope of the
problem
3. Analyze the data
4. Develop alternate solutions and/or actions
5. Write up recommendations to present to your immediate supervisor
6. Implement your approved plan
7. Follow-up to ensure that everything was handled as planned and that the problem was totally
resolved
