Classroom Management
I would like to provide a well-managed classroom where the students are showing Christian
love to each other by working, paying attention, and being cooperative.

To show respect for God and their classmates, they should:
1. Show love to God in all they do.
2. Respect and love others.
3. Respect classroom rules and procedures

Children who make good behavior choices will be rewarded with a ticket. At the end of the
week they will be able to turn those tickets in for a prize. Some of the prizes include
coupons for: Bringing something in for a special sharing, skip homework for one night, sit
with a friend for the day, sit in rolling chair for the day, sit at Mrs. Homans desk for the
day. They also will be able to use them to buy things from the prize box.

At the beginning of the week I will have the letters NOISE on the board. If the class
becomes too loud or has a hard time listening they will lose a letter. On Friday the class
will receive five minutes of free time for each letter left on the board.

If an individual child makes a bad behavior choice, they will receive a warning. If they
continue, they will lose part of their recess. They will either sit quietly to contemplate, or
they will run laps around the playground. If necessary I will contact you to let you know
about their behavior.

I pray that all we do in our classroom is done out of love and thankfulness to God for giving
us our Savior Jesus and the promise of eternal life in heaven.

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

Web Page
Our class has its own web page! On this page you will be able to find all the important
documents you may need during the year. It will have the memory work and other
information you made need. Please explore this page and let me know if you have any
questions. http://mrsshoman.weebly.com
Parent Volunteers
I love to have parent volunteers in the room! You can help correct, read with students,
help with math, or anything else that needs to be done. I can be a much more effective
teacher when I have volunteers to share the load.

We will also need drivers for field trips. Please see if you can make at least one of our
field trips.

School Handbook
Please take the time to read through the school handbook. You will need to be familiar with
the policies on planned absences and tardiness which are detailed in the School
Handbook. It is also good to read through the Handbook to familiarize yourself with the
dress code.

Classroom Singing
Periodically the 1
st
and 2
nd
graders will be singing for worship services at Reformation.
Please make this a priority for your family to attend these special events. Singing in
church is a wonderful way to thank the members of Reformation for supporting our school.

Chapel
Each Wednesday morning at 8:30, the students will be going into church for chapel. All
parents are welcome to stay and join us for this service. The children are invited to bring
in a chapel offering on Wednesday mornings. We give these gifts because Jesus gave His
life for us. It is an expression of our love for the Lord.

Birthdays
We all love birthdays! If you would like to send a treat with your child or bring it in at the
end of the day that would be great. Please just let me know when you are bringing in the
treat. Please consider that we have allergies and dietary issues in our classroom. Fruits and
vegetables are something everyone can eat.
Mid-morning Snacks & Water Consumption
I have found it beneficial for the class to have a mid-morning healthy snack. They will eat
this snack after they complete their morning run. Please do not send in sweet or sticky
items like cake, brownies, frosted cookies, or cupcakes.

I also permit my students to bring a water bottle to school to keep on their desks during
the day and to use at recess. Plain water is the only beverage permitted, and the bottle
must have a secure lid. Water bottles should be taken home regularly to be cleaned.

Homework/Classwork
I believe that homework is necessary for practicing skills that have been learned or for
enriching the classroom experience. In many cases, homework is simply classwork that was
not finished. I try to give ample time in class for the completion of assignments, but some
students work more slowly and must finish at home. Below I will list some of the things you
should be doing with your children every night.

In order to help students get their homework assignments done, students will be given a
homework folder. On one side it will say: Return to School and the other side says: Keep at
Home. After completing their homework it should be place in the Return to School side of
the folder. The homework folder includes the Home Reading Log which must be signed
each evening. I encourage parents to review the contents of your childs homework folder
and planner each night when signing the Reading Log.

I encourage all homework and classwork to be turned in on time. Late assignments will be
graded if they are turned in within a week, but late work will receive a lower grade. If it is
turned in after a week it will not be graded. A student who is absent will receive one extra
day to finish assignment for each day they are absent. Students will not be allowed to call
home if they forget their work. Students should pack their book bags at night with all the
materials needed for the next day. Organization is the key to success!
Memory Work
The foundation of our education is based on the Word of God. Students will recite memory
work every Tuesday and Thursday morning. It is very important that you work with your
child to help them learn these memory treasures so that they may become lifelong
treasures. I will include the memory work schedule and passages in this packet. They will
also be available on the web page.
Daily Reading
This school year I hope to instill a lifelong love of reading in the children. Therefore I
would like the children to be reading every night. Most days I will send home something
for them to read to you. If they bring home a book from school please make sure they
return it the next day. I will also be sending home printed books for them to read, please
send these books back to school until they have a sticker or stamp on them. That means we
are done with them at school, but you can continue to read them at home. If I dont send
home something please have them pick out something they can read. They should read to
you for about 10 minutes and then you should read to them for about 10 minutes.
Spelling
This year we will not be using the traditional spelling books. We will still be using the same
spelling words that go with the reading series we have, but we will be doing many different
activities with these words. I will send home the list of words either on the Friday before
or on Monday. Unless announced in advanced, the students will be having a test on the
words on Friday. Our class will be using www.spellingcity.com in class. I will attach more
information about that website.
Daily Math Drills
In my experience, students cannot move on to higher level reasoning in mathematics until
they master their basic math facts. Mrs. Gillespie has been coming in for years helping to
quiz the children on their math facts. You can help your child prepare by studying with
flashcards or having working with online flashcards at www.mathfactcafe.com . You can
even call out math facts to your child while driving in the car or waiting in the doctors
office! Mastering addition and subtraction facts are particularly challenging, so when
everyone knows their facts we will celebrate with a movie! If you see Mrs. Gillespie, please
take the time to thank her for all she does.

Popcorn Words
Popcorn Words are words that tend to pop up frequently in reading. I have some
volunteers who will be working with the students on these words. It would also be very
helpful for you to work with your child at home on these words. The words they are
working on will be sent home daily.

I hope this handbook will aid you in helping your child succeed this year. Please feel free to
contact me any time you have a question.
