Delays

There are two types of delays in Voice over IP: fixed delays and variable delays. Fixed delays include propagation delay due to distance, serialization delay from clocking bits, and processing delay from codecs and packetization. Variable delays consist of de-jitter buffers, queuing delays due to congestion, and WAN delays depending on the type of link. Prioritizing queues and using codecs that reduce delay can help minimize these delays.

Delay
Delays

 Fixed Delay:
 Propagation Delay.
 Serialization Delay.
 Processing Delay.
Fixed Delays

 Propagation Delay:
 Caused by distance.
 6 micro second per kilometer.

 Serialization Delay:
 Caused by clocking the bits on the line.
 Can be improved by high speed link.
 Improved by a proper queuing scheme.
Fixed Delays

 Processing Delay:
 Algorithmic factors such as Codec selection/ Compression /
Decompression.
 Packetization, or the number of samples per packet.
 To improve the delay, use different codecs , Silence
Suppression or VAD
Delays

 Variable Delay:
 De-jitter Buffers.
 Queuing Delays.
 Wan Delays
Variable Delays

 De-jitter Buffers:
 Buffering delay
 Play 1st “talk spurt” when next packet in sequence is most likely to come.

 Queuing Delay:
 In case of congestion.
 Need to provide queuing Priority.
Variable Delays

 WAN / Service Provider Delay.

 Network delay, caused by the type of link.
