Thank you for your interest in the 2011 Atlanta Quest Front Ensemble. All prospective
members, including veterans, will audition for spots in the group during the course of
our audition dates. ALL spots are open, and instrumentation will be determined during
and after auditions.
The audition process will include a brief individual audition, but is primarily based on
your performance throughout the day and progress between camps.
During your audition, you will be evaluated on the fundamentals of:
1. timing
2. rhythmic accuracy
3. pitch accuracy
4. quality of sound
5. technique
6. strength/ chops
7. sight- reading
In addition, we are looking for great attitudes and your ability to adapt to the ensemble.
Conicts with camp dates, dedication and commitment to the organization are also of
extreme importance.
Those auditioning on a keyboard instrument should prepare the provided exercises.
The two mallet exercises will be played in all 12 major keys AND with the inside two
mallets. For your individual audition, a four mallet solo is preferable, but a segment of a
drum corps/ WGI/ marching show is acceptable.
It is recommended that you are familiar with the piston stroke concept from the
Stevens Method of Movement book.
It is helpful, though not necessary, to be familiar with both the Burton grip and Stevens
technique.
Those auditioning for auxiliary percussion spots should prepare a few basic batterie
exercises such as 16th note timing, triplet timing, and an accents exercise. Anything
used by your school percussion program should be ne. Also, please prepare at least a
few of the keyboard exercises that are provided. It would also be benecial to be
familiar with the Quest batterie exercises.
Best of luck!
