Qu 2917

This document contains the solution to showing that the Laguerre polynomial equation L'n(x) - nL'n-1(x) + nLn-1(x) = 0 is true for L3(x). It sets n=3 in the equation. It then substitutes the expressions for L3(x), L'3(x), L2(x), and L'2(x) and simplifies the left and right sides of the equation to show they are equal to 0, demonstrating the property is true for n=3.

QUESTION 29.17

Laguerre polynomials also satisfy the equation

L’n(x) - nL’n-1(x) + nLn-1(x) = 0

Show that this is true for L3(x).

SOLUTION

Let n=3,

So we have,

L’3(x) – 3L’2(x) + 3L2(x) = 0

L3(x) = -x³ + 9x² - 18x + 6 L2(x) = x² - 4x + 2

L’3(x) = -3x² + 18x -18 L’2(x) = 2x - 4

Substitute L’3(x), L2(x) and L’2(x) into

L.H.S L’3(x) – 3L’2(x) + 3L2(x)

= (-3x² + 18x -18) – 3(2x - 4) + 3(x² - 4x + 2)

= -3x² + 18x -18 – 6x + 12 + 3x² - 12x + 6

= 0 R.H.S

That show the equation true for L3(x).
