In this lesson the following objectives are taught:
- Students will determine what a rate is
- Students will brainstorm areas they have seen rates in the real world
- Students will do an activity to practice using and applying rates
- Students will use previous knowledge of proportions to problem solve with
rates
Students will
- Interact in a class discussion that refreshes their minds of the previous topics
of ratios, similar figures, proportions
- Listen to the verbal instructions provided by the teacher describing the class
activity
- Participate in discussion about heart rate and pulse, find pulse
- Record the measurements asked for in the table
- Participate in discussion about rates and unit pricing
- Try the rate question
- Create a problem of their own about solving proportions
- Wrap up with a refreshment on how heart rates connect to ratios
- All rates are ratios, not all ratios are rates
Teacher will
- Write the guiding questions for the day on the board
- Keep a running list of vocabulary words on the board for student reference
- Lead a discussion surrounding previous concepts and any homework difficulty
- Provide verbal instructions for the students about the measurements they will
be taking, comparing and using to make predictions, and solve proportions
