If I have 75 pieces of bologna and 60 pieces of
bread,
which will run out first as I make sandwiches?
(LR)
How many sandwiches can I make?
How much of my other starting material will I
have left?

LR
Will run out first
Determines how much product can be made
Will be completely gone when the reaction is
over

ER
Is not used up
How much is used depends on how much of
the limiting reagent there is
Some will be left over when the reaction is
complete

Steps
1. Pick either reactant, take it to the other
reactant.
Do I have enough?
Label the LR and the ER
2. How much product can be made?
Take the LR to product
3. How much ER is left?
Take LR to ER, subtract
Percent Yield
Actual yield___ X 100
Theoretical yield

Actual yield what was obtained in the lab
Theoretical yield from stoichiometric
calculations, how much product could be
formed
