WEEK 4: Thermal conductivity

Heat
Energy that cause the
molecules to move rapidly.
i.e. Someone catching on fire
Heat V.S Temperature
Temperature
Not Energy
Usually measured in
Celsius (C) or Fahrenheit (F)
3 mechanisms for heat transfer
Conduction
A diffusive process wherein
molecules transmit their
energy to other molecules
by colliding with them.

A process associated with the
motion of the medium. When
a hot material flows into a
cold material, it will heat the
region - and vise versa.

Convection
The transfer of heat via electromagnetic radiation.
Example - the Sun.

Radiation
Why does metal
feel colder than
wood, if they are
both at the same
temperature?
Metal is a conductor, wood is an insulator. The metal
conducts the heat away from your hands, the wood does
not conduct the heat away from your hands as well as
the metal, so the wood feels warmer than the metal.

First law of thermodynamics- It states
that energy can be transferred from one
system to another, but it cannot be
created or destroyed.

i.e. The food we eat creates energy to our
body, energy to do physical movements
