4 8functions Relations

1. The Do Now Quiz contains 3 questions about identifying functions and graphing linear equations. 2. The objective is to identify when a relation is a function by using the vertical line test. An example shows applying the vertical line test to two relations to determine which is a function. 3. The document provides examples and instructions for students to practice identifying functions, evaluating functions at given values, and graphing a linear function.

Do Now Quiz

1. Find the slope and the y-intercept of 4x − 2y = 8

2. Write x +y +3=0 in slope intercept form. Then graph
the equation.

3. Are the graphs: y − 2x = 5 and 2y = 4x parallel? Why?

4.8 Functions and Relations

Objective: Identify when a relation is a function.

Example 1 Identifying Functions

Decide whether the relation is a function. If so give the

domain and the range.

VERTICAL LINE TEST FOR FUNCTIONS

A relation is a function of the horizontal-axis variable if and

only if no vertical line passes through two or more points on
the graph.
