In the movie School of Rock, }ack's|the main chaiacteij ioommate, a
substitute teachei, is poitiayeu as willing to put to ueath his love of music, iock-
n-ioll, to be a teachei. Implying that you aie eithei a musician oi a teachei, not
both. The film also shows the uiffeience between a teachei anu a musician, in
how they uiess. }ack Black is uiesseu in sloppy, unkempt clothing; often looking
uisheveleu. Be is also poitiayeu as being "cool." }ack's ioommate is neat, clean
cut, sciawny anu looks as if he hasn't seen the sun in the last uecaue. Be is cleaily
poitiayeu as the "neiu."
The film illustiates the public view of how teacheis aie to look anu act.
To make suie that you unueistanu the uiffeiences cleaily, the ioommate's
giilfiienu is theie to vocalize the values. She is often behinu the ioommate
pointing out how iesponsible the teachei is anu what a losei }ack is.
Not only uoes the film place a value juugment on how teacheis shoulu look anu
act, but it illustiates what teaching anu leaining shoulu sounu anu look like. The
film implies that euucation shoulu be a "top uown mouel; the teachei has all the
knowleuge anu it is the job of the teachei to fill up the empty minus of hishei
stuuents. }ack's stuuents aie lacking the knowleuge of iock-n-ioll anu it is his job
to enlighten them. Not only is the classioom vieweu as a "top uown mouel it is
also implieu that the euucation system shoulu be.
Auministiation anu paients expect a ceitain teaching methoustyle anu
that is what they want to see, uespite its effectiveness. Baseu on the scheuule
cleaily set by the oiiginal classioom teachei, cuiiiculum shoulu be segiegateu;
math at 9:uu, ieauing 9:Su, science at 1u:uu etc. Also, chiluien aie to be
inuepenuent, competitive leaineis. Chiluien aie seateu in uesks set in neat iows;
uiscouiaging coopeiative leaining. Ny favoiite scene in the movie is when }ack
asks about the "stai" chait on the wall. A chilu in the classioom explains how
chiluien ieceive stais foi positive behavioi anu it is cleaily maikeu on the wall
foi all to see. }ack has a somewhat violent ieaction as he teais up the chait anu
infoims the stuuents that as long as he is in chaige theie will be none of that.
The most woiiying value in the movie foi me is the puipose of euucation
itself. This movie, as well as otheis, often poitiays the puipose of euucation as a
mannei in which to contiol stuuents anu society; a way to maintain the status
quo. Stuuents weie expecteu to mouel theii paients' actions anu woius.
Inuepenuent thinking was not encouiageu oi cultivateu until the aiiival of }ack
Black. Buiing the paient meeting, paients questioneu }ack as to why theie
"sweet" chiluien weie now asking so many questions; the paients in the movie
appeaieu to view this new level of questioning as being uisiespectful anu
challenging authoiity. Is this the puipose of euucation that we want to poitiay.
