Switching techniques allow data to be transferred across interconnection networks. Circuit switching establishes a dedicated path for data transfer but can leave resources idle if transfer times are short. Packet switching breaks data into packets that are routed independently, making more efficient use of network resources but introducing delays associated with packetization, transmission, and reassembly. New techniques like wormhole switching aim to combine advantages of circuit and packet switching by establishing a virtual circuit for packets.
