To: Employment Search Committee From: Kathleen Flanagan-Hudson, D.Ed., Professor of Education, Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio [email protected] Date: 2/19/2011 Re: Letter of Recommendation for Lauren Moon I am pleased to provide this letter of support for Lauren Moons application for a teaching position with your school district. I have known Lauren for four years, starting when she was a freshman student in my Introduction to Education class at Ashland University. I am currently serving as supervisor for her student teaching internship at Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida. In that capacity I have reviewed her lesson plans, watched her teach and assess her students, and met regularly with her mentor teacher and Lauren to review her progress. Lauren has a mastery of her content, and plans lessons which are appropriate for her students skill level, individual development, and interests. She has created a classroom climate of respect and fairness. She maintains consistent standards of behavior, while demonstrating an easy rapport with students. Lauren presents material clearly, incorporating technology as a way of representing visual art content knowledge when appropriate to the lesson. During her internship Lauren has had the opportunity to teach sophomores, juniors, and seniors, in classes ranging from Art I and II, to AP Art, to classes for students enrolled in an International Baccalaureate program. She has a wonderful connection with students and has shown the ability to teach concepts at each level. Lauren is organized, enthusiastic, and sensitive to students needs. She works hard to ensure the job gets done all the while accomplishing these responsibilities with great initiative and a positive attitude. She continually challenges herself by researching new concepts and design instruction. She collaborates easily with her mentor teacher, and is positive, enthusiastic, and mature. I highly recommend Lauren Moon for a teaching position. She will be an asset to the teaching profession. If I can provide any additional information regarding Laurens teaching, please do not hesitate to call me at 419-651-4524.

February 17, 2011 Dear Review Committee, I have known and worked closely with Lauren Moon as an art intern in the IB visual arts studio at Riverview High School. Lauren has demonstrated a strong competency level with her ability to design curriculum and facilitate discussion in the studio art environment. She has an excellent rapport with the adolescent students and never hesitates to redirect students when appropriate. She has established and has maintained consistent standards for student behavior. In addition to presenting content knowledge in a meaningful and engaging manner, Lauren communicates high expectations for the students. She treats them all with respect and fairness which establishes a positive learning environment. The research and self-reflection aspect of the IB Visual Arts curriculum requires students to independently investigate the art from many cultures, to describe the universal messages communicated, and to reflect intellectually on how their research has impacted their own individual artistic development. Lauren demonstrates a keen sensitivity to how individual students develop with respect to their personal cultural background, socio-economic level and individual ability levels. The instructional strategies presented in the art studio is engaging and appropriate to student needs, desires, and grounded in theory. Lauren has become very adept at integrating current technology to aid in the teaching and learning process. While observing Lauren, I have seen her communicate objectives and procedures clearly demonstrating knowledge of the visual arts pedagogy. She actively monitors students learning by assisting students and walking through the studio helping those students that need clarification. The pacing of her lesson presentations represents student reflection and discussion. Lauren works cooperatively and collaboratively with all members of the arts staff and the county art teachers. She has attended meetings and participated in discussions that demonstrate a thoughtful and professional reflection of art and its content. I highly recommend Lauren Moon for an art instructional position in your county. Her energy and persistence will reflect in a positive manner for any academically rigorous school community.
