Class Test Friction

1) The document appears to be a class test on friction containing two questions. The first question asks for the range of l/d that a bar of length l placed at a 30 degree angle in an opening of width d will remain in static equilibrium, given the coefficient of static friction is 0.4. 2) The second question asks to draw the free body diagram of a cylinder and wedge system, identify contact surfaces where slip could occur, and determine the minimum horizontal force P required to initiate upward motion of the cylinder, given its weight, the coefficient of friction, and that the wedge rests on frictionless rollers on a frictionless ground.

CE102: CLASS TEST ON FRICTION ROLL NO: 1.

The uniform slender bar of length l is placed in the opening of width d at the 30o angle shown. For what range of l/d will the bar remain in static equilibrium? The coefficient of static friction at A and B is s = 0.4.

2. We want to calculate the horizontal force P towards right (as shown) on the light 10o wedge necessary to initiate upward movement of the 40 kg cylinder. The weight of the wedge may be ignored. The wedge is supported by frictionless rollers that are resting on a frictionless ground. The coefficient of friction between the wedge and the cylinder, and the cylinder and the vertical wall is 0.25. Draw the FBD of the cylinder and the wedge identifying all the unknown forces. Clear identify the contact surface (s) where impending slip will occur. Justify your answer. Hence determine the unknown forces at the contact surfaces at A and B. Find the value of P.
