Extrusion and Wire Drawing 34

Direct extrusion uses a conical die to deform metal into a rod shape. The extrusion pressure has two components - the pressure needed to deform the metal through the die, and the pressure required to overcome friction between the billet and container. The total extrusion pressure equals the sum of the deformation pressure and friction pressure.

Direct Extrusion through a conical die

The pressure required for direct extrusion of a rod has two components:

1. Pressure required to deform the metal through the conical die ( pd ) 2. Pressure required to overcome friction between the billet and the container ( pf )
So, extrusion pressure, ( pe )= ( pd ) + ( pf )
