Reaction Design

This document introduces the design of parallel chemical reactions, which involve more than one reaction occurring simultaneously within the same reactor vessel. It notes that for parallel reactions, both the required reactor size and distribution of reaction products are affected by flow patterns within the vessel. The document also indicates that the analysis of parallel reactions requires determining the optimal reactor size as well as studying how products are distributed, and that achieving a small reactor size while maximizing the desired product can sometimes conflict.

Introduction

Design for parallel reactions

Introduction to multiple reactions - On single reactions showed that the performance (size) of a reactor was influenced by the pattern of flow within the vessel. - In designing parallel reaction, both the size requirement and the distribution of reaction products are affected by the pattern of flow within the vessel. - we may recall at this point that the single reaction requires only one rate expression to describe its kinetic behavior whereas multiple reaction require more than one rate expressions. - Many multiple reactions can be considered to be combinations of two primary types: parallel reactions and series reactions.

Two distinct analyses Determination of reactor size Study of the product distribution This two requirements, small reactor size and maximization of desired product., may run counter to each other. Concerns more primarily optimization with respect to product distribution
