Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a high-performance concrete that can flow and fill formwork without mechanical vibration. SCC research at UIUC focuses on understanding the rheology, segregation, formwork pressure, and creep/shrinkage behavior of SCC. While SCC offers benefits like ease of placement, challenges include dynamic segregation during flow and increased risk of early-age cracking due to high shrinkage stresses if not properly proportioned with limits on paste content and flow length. Continued research seeks new tests, models, and strategies to better characterize and control SCC properties and long-term performance.
