Comprehension Practice

Directions: (1) On your own paper, copy each of the following sentences. (2) Skip lines between each
sentence. (3) Draw one line under the complete subject and two lines under the complete predicate.
Remember, all the words in a sentence will be either part of the subject or the predicate.

Example: The history of baseball dates back hundreds of years.


1. People in England played rounders in the 1600s.

2. This English game was similar to baseball.

3. Players hit a ball with a bat.

4. American colonists in the 1700s enjoyed rounders too.

5. Americans changed the game into baseball.

6. Alexander Cartwright was probably the father of baseball.

7. He organized the first baseball club in 1845.

8. The name of his team was “Knickerbocker Base Ball Club.”

9. The Knickerbocker Club lost its first game.

10. Cartwright developed many of the rules of baseball.

11. He decided the size of the baseball diamond, for example.

12. Today’s rules are similar to Cartwright’s rules.
