Dessa Marie L. Fale BSCE-5 Febie Maricar L. Maypa BSCE-5: Problem Set

This document contains 5 soil problems involving the determination of properties like shrinkage limit, specific gravity, plasticity index, and liquidity index from given soil characteristic data. The data provided includes Atterberg limits, initial and final volumes, wet and dry mass measurements, and shrinkage dish measurements obtained from laboratory tests. Calculations are required to determine the requested soil properties based on the given data.

PROBLEM SET:

1. A clay has the following Atterberg limits: liquid limit = 60%, plastic limit = 40%, shrinkage limit = 25%. the clay shrinks from 15 to 9.57 when the moisture content is decreased from the liquid limit to the shrinkage limit.

2. A saturated soil characteristics: Initial volume = 24.6 Final volume = 15.9 Mass of wet soil = 44g Mass dry soil = 30.1g.

PROBLEM SET: 4. During the determination of the shrinkage limit of sandy clay, the following laboratory data was obtained. Wet weight of soil + dish = 87.85 g Dry weight of soil + dish = 76.91 g Weight of dish = 52.70 g Mass of dish coated with petroleum jelly plus wet soil. Volumetric determination of soil pat: Weight of dish + mercury = 430.80 g Mass of dish coated with petroleum jelly plus ovendried soil. Weight of dish = 244.62 g Density of solid soil = 2650 Volume of wet soil (same as volume of shrinkage dish).
