Principles of Selection and Adaptation of Songs and Poems

Learner Levels
Primary school consists of six standards which are one to six. Teachers must teach poems and songs based on their levels in English language. Teaching must be based on their grammar, and their skills levels in English.

Lexical
Lexical means vocabularies. Lexis which be used in the poems or songs must be based on their level. The lexis must be simple and easy to understand, complicated words are not be encouraged to use.

Sentences
Songs for young children are generally written using short simple sentences, using simple verb forms such as Simple Present, Present Continuous, or Simple Past. It is not necessarily true that all songs for young children must be in a simple form, but it is important not be too complicated.

For example a one long sentence, which could be repeated many times possibly with small variations. Children will enjoy the challenge of tongue twisters and clever word combinations.

Language skills
The words and sentences in childrens poems or songs must be easy to be listened, read, voiced and written. Children are still young so they need to learn from the basic. Simple words will make the process of pronunciation and writing be easier.
