Question 2 An aircraft of mass 5.

00 104 kg flies in a horizontal circle of radius r with its wing tilted at an angle of 35o from the horizontal. The speed of the aircraft is 250 m/s. The diagram shows the force L and the weight W of the aircraft.

a) What is the magnitude of the vertical component of L (2 Marks)

b) What is the magnitude of L (2 Marks)

c) Calculate the horizontal component of L (2 Marks)

d) Use Newtons 2nd Law of motion to calculate the centripetal acceleration of the aircraft? (2 Marks)

e) Calculate the radius , r of the circular path of the aircraft (3 Marks)

Question 3 Io, Ganymede and Europa are three of Jupiters four Galilean natural satellites. The table below lists some physical properties of the moons Io, Europa and Ganymede.

Name Io Europa Ganymede

Orbital radius (m) 4.22 108 6.71 108 10.70 108

Orbital period (Earth days) 1.769 3.551 7.155

Radius of moon (m) 1.82 106 1.52 106 2.61 106

Mass of moon (kg) 8.94 1022 4.87 1022 14.9 1022

Calculate the maximum gravitational force that Europa exerts on Ganymede, the furthest of these 3 moons. [4 marks]

Question 4 A hump back bridge is constructed so it has a radius of 50.0 m. What is the maximum speed a motorcyclist can travel across the bridge without lifting off the bridge?

(3 Marks)

Question 5 A wall crane is used in a service station to lift engines from cars and transfer them to a work bench. Rollers are used so the mechanic can move the engine form one end of the beam to the other as shown in the diagram. The beam (B) is 2.1 m long, the support wire (S) is attached 0.4 m form the outer end at 30 to the beam.

a.

On the diagram above, label all the external forces acting on the beam (B). (4 marks)

b.

If the uniform beam has a mass of 35 kg and the load (L) including the rollers, 180 kg, find the tension in the support wire when the load is at the outer end. (4 marks)

c.

Calculate the reaction force exerted by the wall on beam, B. If you could not calculate the tension in the support wire, use 4.5103N. (4 marks)

d.

How does the force in the support wire vary as the load moves along the beam and away from the wall? Explain. (3 marks)
