Day 4 Unit 1 Ucmp Classwise Notes

The document discusses unconventional machining processes. It lists laser beam machining, plasma arc machining, electron beam machining, and ion beam machining as processes that use thermal energy. It then compares mechanical and electrical energy processes in terms of process capability and economy. Some key points are that EDM and ECM have higher metal removal rates than conventional machining, but also higher power requirements. EDM can achieve very fine finishes and tolerances but has issues with electrolyte contamination and part corrosion. Overall economics depend on factors like capital costs, tooling costs, power consumption, removal rates, and tool wear.

UNCONVENTIONAL MACHINING PROCESS UNIT-I CLASS IV PART-A

1. What are the characteristics of unconventional machining process? place. In NTM, there may not be a physical tool present. Material removal may occur with chip formation or even no chip formation may take In NTM, the tool nee not be har er than the work piece material

PART-B 1. &ompare the mechanical an electrical energy processes in terms of %rocess capability an

%rocess economy? Machining characteristics r Pr cess ca!a"i#it$ The Machining characteristics can be analyse with respect to ' (i) Metal removal rate (ii) Tolerance maintaine (iii) *urface finish obtaine (iv) +epth of surface amage (v) %ower re,uire for machining

The metal removal rates by #&M an %-M are respectively one.fourth an 1.!/ times that of conventional whereas others are only a small fractions of it. %ower re,uirement of #&M an %-M is also very high when compare with other non.conventional machining processes. This involves higher capital cost for those processes. #&M has very low tool wear rate but it has certain fairly serious problems regar ing the contamination of the electrolyte use an the corrosion of machine parts. The surface finish an tolerance obtaine by various processes e0cept %-M is satisfactory. Pr cess Ec n %$ The economics of the various processes are analyse on the basis of following factors (i) &apital cost (ii) Tooling cost (iii) &onsume power cost (iv) Metal removal rate efficiency (v) Tool wear.

The capital cost of #&M is very high when compare for -1M an %-M are comparatively low.

contour grin ing an other non.conventional machining processes whereas capital costs #+M has got higher tooling cost than other machining processes.%ower consumption is very low for %-M an "2M processes whereas it is greater in case of #&M. The metal removal efficiency is very high for #2M an "2M than for other processes. In conclusion, the suitability of application of any of the processes is epen ent upon various factors an must be consi ere all or some of them before applying nonconventional processes.
