2. Comments on teacher candidate's effectiveness of overall instruction, use of developmentally appropriate strategies, ability to lead the class, professionalism, attitudes, and demeanor throughout the period of observation:

This was a social studies lesson on native Americans. Ms. Lemmon reminded the students that she lives on a farm and told them the crops she grows. She asked the children which Indian tribe grows the same crops and where they were located on the map. Students were asked to discuss with their shoulder partners why various crops are grown in various regions. students were given cards with descriptions such as "occupations of Lakotas." Ms. Lemmon and Ms. Neim demonstrated what the students were going to do, illustrate the description on the other side of the card. Students were placed in ability groups and worked on the cards together to illustrate the concept. Ms. Lemmon gathered the children back on the rub and had the group guess which description was illustrated. She then asked the group where they would place this card on a Venn diagram which had the Powhatans, the Lakotas and both. The last activity was to pair students again. One student was a Lakota and one was a Powhatan. They ere provided

interview questions to interview the Indian of the other tribe. Ms. Lemmon and Ms. Neims modeled the interview before the student did the activity. Students went back to the rug and reviewed what they had done before lunch. This lesson was fast-paced. Ms. Lemmon used the timer on the Smart Board to move things along. The behavior in the room was excellent--Ms. Lemmon gave out rewards for good behavior. An exit ticket was given each student with a Venn diagram as an assessment tool. Ms. Lemmon has a very pleasant, calm demeanor. At one point she told the students she was excited about the lesson and they were going to have fun. These words made the students anticipate something they would enjoy.
