Modal Verbs: COLUD - Past COULD HAVE (Done)

Modal verbs are used to express concepts like ability, obligation, necessity, advice, requests, offers, suggestions, possibility, predictions and speculation. The modal verbs discussed are: can, could, be able to, can't, must, have to, mustn't, don't have to, may, might and should. Each modal verb has specific uses, for example "can" expresses ability or possibility, "must" expresses necessity or certainty, and "should" gives advice or opinion.

MODAL VERBS are auxiliary verbs which allow us to express concepts such as ability, obligation, necessity and advice

. We also use them to make requests, offers and suggestions, to discuss possibility, to make predictions and to speculate. BE ABLE TO is possible instead of can, but can is more usual. Ex. Are you able to speak any foreign language? CAN.- We use can to say that something is possible or that somebody has the ablity to do something. Ex. Can you speak any foreign language? COLUD.past . -We use could for general ablitiy, but if we are talking about what happened in a particular situation we use WAS/WERE ABLE TOor MANAGED TO COULD HAVE(done). -For things which were possible but didn't happen. CAN'T. -We use can't to say that we feel sure something is not possible. -For the PAST we use MAST HAVE(done) and CANT'T HAVE(done) Ex. The phone rung but i didn't hear it. Imust have been asleep. I/YOU/HE must have been (asleep) can't been (doing, working) done/gone/known.. MUST. -We use must to say that we feel sure something is true. Ex. You must do it. (it is necessary) MUST AND HAVE TO. -We use must and have to say that it is necessary to do something, but there is a difference between must and have to. MUST. -Personal, when we give our personal feelings HAVE TO.- Impersonal, we use it for facts not for our personal feelings. Rule or the situation. MUSTN'T AND DONT'T HAVE TO Ex. You musn't do something= it's necessary that you don't do it You don't have to do something= you don't need to do it. MAY OR MIGHT. -We use it for say that something is a possibility. I/YOU/HE may be(true/in his office) might be(doing, working..) do, know, have, want.. -For the past we use may have or might have. -We use may or might to talk about possible actions or happenings in the future. -Usually we use might when situation is not real. SHOULD. We use should when we want to to give advice or an opinion to someone.
