PCB Trace Widths Are Calculated Using Following Formula

The document discusses guidelines for calculating PCB trace widths and ensuring sufficient clearance between traces and pads. It provides a formula for calculating minimum trace width based on current, temperature rise, copper thickness, and other factors. It also describes an example where the difference between a pad and drill hole size is less than twice the track-to-pad spacing, resulting in an error.

PCB trace widths are calculated using following formula;

where: W = Minimum required track width in mils I = Maximum current in Amps dT = Maximum allowable temperature rise above ambient in C h = Thickness of the copper cladding in oz/ft^2 k = 0.024 for inner layers and k= 0.048 for outer layers

The size of the drill hole subtracted from the size of the plane layer pad (power or ground pad) must be greater than or equal to twice the Track-to-Pad parameter. In cases where this inequality does not hold true, an "insufficient clearance" error results. For example: A board design has a padstack with a drill hole size of 110 mils, a plane layer pad size of 120 mils and track-to-pad spacing of 10 mils. The difference of the plane layer pad and drill hole sizes is 10 mils. The track-to-pad spacing parameter multiplied by 2 equals 20 mils. Since 10 mils is less than 20 mils, the inequality described above does not hold true and an "insufficient clearance" error occurs.

Fiducials Fiducials shall meet the following requirements. 1. Need to be tinned and have a 1 - 1.5 mm diameter circle. 2. Solder mask opening should be at least 1mm greater diameter than fiducial. 3. Must have a minimum distance of 1mm from any fiducial to any land, trace or hole. 4. Fiducials should have a minimum distance of 1.5mm to any silk screen marking. 5. There should be a minimum of 4 mm distance from fiducials to any board edge 6. Ideally 3 or 4 fiducials are to be used for each board. 7. 3 fiducials should lie on two lines that intersect at a right angle. 8. A minimum of 2 fiducials is required for each PWB. 9. Space fiducials as far apart as possible within all restrictions stated above. 10. Place fiducials on each side of PWB that contains SMT components. 11. Place fiducials on each individual board. 12. Also place a set of fiducials on each panel array in the margins using above restrictions.
