Interim Mayor: Progress Continues at City Hall City Council Committees Considered Hot Neighborhood Topics Today
SAN DIEGO, CA (October 23, 2013) Interim Mayor Todd Gloria today announced actions taken by two City Council committees today that further demonstrated the progress being made on behalf of neighborhoods. The San Diego City Council and I are focused on strengthening San Diegos neighborhoods, and the outcomes of todays meetings prove that, said Interim Mayor Gloria. After having a lengthy discussion with the Citys recently re-hired state and federal lobbyists as part of the development of San Diegos legislative program, the Rules and Economic Development Committee moved forward with the Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance, which should be considered by the full City Council in the coming months. The Land Use and Housing Committee also considered several critical items today, including recommendation of the Interim Height Ordinance for the Uptown communities and of an amendment to the Centre City Planned District Ordinance. Interim Mayor Gloria was especially pleased with the Land Use and Housing Committees recommendation of approval of the Underground Utility Advisory Committee. The Committee would explore improved coordination and alignment around the Citys undergrounding program, utility boxes, and the costs and benefits associated with various options related to maintenance and reliability. The committee would also explore how other cities and utilities throughout the country have addressed issues surrounding utility undergrounding. The committee would be made up of seven members of the public, six members from utilities, and two City staff members. It would have a one-year finite timeline. The City Attorney will now prepare a resolution related to the formation, which will be considered by the City Council at an upcoming meeting. The popular issue of food trucks was also discussed by the Land Use and Housing Committee. Stakeholders and members of the public provided input to the Committee and City staff about how food trucks should be regulated. Amendments to the Land Development Code will now be developed and should be considered by the City Council in March 2014. ###
