Design, Fabrication, Installation and Testing of Solar Water Still

This document describes the design, fabrication, installation and testing of a solar water still to produce fresh water from brackish or salt water using solar energy. The solar still works by heating water with sunlight until it evaporates, then condenses on the glass plate where it is collected as fresh water. The design aims for high efficiency through high feed water temperature, large temperature difference between water and condensing surface, and low vapor leakage. It also aims for a large output by optimizing the size of the system and maximum heat capture. The still will be tested at a latitude of 28.6833° in Sahibabad. Potential issues include leaks, glass breakage, algae growth, dust accumulation, and salt buildup

NITIKA ARORA NITESH PARMAR NIHARIKA YADAV MUKESH KARGETI MAYANK KUMAR AGARWAL
Project Guide: Dr. K. K. Srivastava

INTRODUCTION

To fabricate and analyze a water distillation system so as to produce a cheap , portable and depends upon renewable source of energy i.e. Solar Energy Limited availability of fresh water

Distillation of brackish water .

LITERATURE

Approximately 1.8x10^11 MW intercepted by Earth Surface from Sun . Energy required to evaporate water is 2260 KJ/kg. To pump 1kg of water through 20m requires 0.2 KJ of energy only. Distillation requires where fresh water is not available easily .

Suns energy heats water up to the point of evaporation, water evaporates and condenses on the glass plate whereby it is collected. Types of Solar Stills
Active

Type Passive Type

DESIGN

Design objective for solar still For high efficiency: a high feed water temperature. a large temperature difference between feed water and condensing surface. low vapour leakage. For Large Output : Size of the System Maximum Heat Capture

Work Planned

To design a Canopy like system with two glass plates inclined at an angle of 157 degree and 23 degree anticlockwise respectively from the horizontal Sahibabad Latitude: 28.6833

Some problems with solar still

Poor fittings and joints. Cracking, breakage or scratches on glass. Growth of an algae and deposition of dust.

Accumulation of salt.
