Exponents Discovery

1. The document discusses exponents and their properties. It explains that the base is the number being multiplied and the exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself. 2. When multiplying exponents with the same base, you add the exponents and keep the base. When dividing exponents with the same base, you subtract the exponents and keep the base. 3. You can also raise an exponent to a power by multiplying the original exponent by the new exponent raising it.

Exponents Discovery

1. I have learned that when multiplying the base by a negative power it ends up as a decimal, even though I understand it ends up as a decimal I still dont understand how to get the answer. I also learned other things too, such as an exponent can be drawn as dimensions but we cant draw anything if it is as 4th dimension or higher. I also learned when something has a power of one it will not be multiplied at all and it can be drawn as a line. 2. The base is the big number that that has the exponent attached to it and will be multiplied by it self the number of times that the power is. 3. The power is the small number in the upper right hand corner of the exponent, that tells you how many times the exponent should have itself multiply itself by itself. 4. When there is an exponent it is telling you to multiply the base in the exponent by itself the number of times that the power is telling you so in other words if the base is 2 and the power is 3 then it is telling you to multiply 2 x 2 x 2. Because the base is 2 you are multiplying 2s and because the power is three you multiply 3 2s together. 5. A power is a short cut to telling you how many times you should multiply one number, the base, by itself. 6. You could use geometry to describe squaring or cubing a number by drawing either a cube or a square then looking at what the base is and making each face have a grid of the base x the base to find the area of that face. Base 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 Exponent 4 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3 -4 Meaning (decimals) 2x2x2x2 2x2x2 2x2 2 Meaning (fraction) 2x2x2x2 2x2x2 2x2 2 2x x x x x x x x x x x Value (decimals) 16 8 4 2 1 0.5 0.25 0.125 0.0625 Value (fraction) 16 8 4 2 1
