Heat Sink Calculation

This document provides calculations to determine the required heat sink thermal resistance (RthHA) for two different triacs (BTA204 and BTA24/T25) based on their maximum junction temperature, power dissipation, and ambient temperature. For the BTA204 operating at 3A, the required RthHA is calculated to be 9.8°C/W. For the higher power BTA24/T25, the required RthHA is calculated to be 2.5°C/W to maintain safe operating temperatures. Manufacturer and pricing information is also provided for the BTA204 part.

Heat Sink Calculation for BTA204

TJ T A
P = ------------------------------------------------------------------------R thJC + R thCH + R thHA
P = Power dissipated in Triac when current flows
Calculation is for 3A current.
Triac can handle 3x230 = 690W
For 3A current power dissipated is less than 4.5W
Max junction temp is 125
However 3A is available only upto 110 appx.
Maximum ambient temperature is set to 50 degrees
R thHA =

110 50 (4.5 3) (4.5 0.5)

----------------------------------------------------------4.5

= 9.8 K/W or C/W

Manufacturer part 289-AB - Wakefield

Mouser price 0.19 for 500
Thermal resistance 9 C/W
BTA24 or T25 SMD package 24A heat sink calculation
RthHA <= 110-50-(17.5x0.8)-(17.5x0.5)
-----------------------------------17.5
= 2.5
