Structural Mechanics Ii Tutorial Sheet #8

This document provides two structural mechanics problems to solve using the direct stiffness approach. The first problem involves calculating the axial forces in a truss when one member experiences a temperature increase. The second problem involves calculating the axial forces in a truss when one member is fabricated too short in length. Both problems require using the direct stiffness approach method and properties provided, like cross-sectional area, modulus of elasticity, and coefficient of thermal expansion, to determine the member axial forces.

STRUCTURAL MECHANICS II Tutorial Sheet #8

Autumn 2009

Assigned on Thursday, October 08 1. Using the Direct Stiffness Approach, obtain the axial forces in the truss shown in Figure 1, when the temperature in member BD is increased by 50 C. For all members, assume A = 20 cm2, E = 2105 MPa, and = 1/(75000 C). 2. Using the Direct Stiffness Approach, obtain the axial forces in the truss shown in Figure 2, if the member BC is fabricated 0.02 m too short before being placed in the truss. Assume AE = 400 kN for all members.
