NOTES ON POLYGONS 1. Names of Polygons: Polygons are named according to the number of sides that they have.

(They also have the same number of angles as they do sides.) Number of Sides Name of Polygon Triangle 3 Quadrilateral 4 Pentagon 5 Hexagon 6 Heptagon or Septagon 7 Octagon 8 Nonagon 9 Decagon 10 Dodecagon 12 n gon n 2. Convex: Describes any polygon without any indentations. These polygons are convex:

Quadrilateral

Octagon

Pentagon

Hexagon

These polygons are Nonconvex or Concave:

Dodecagon

Heptagon

Hexagon

Decagon

3. Equilateral: Describes a polygon having all sides congruent. 4. Equiangular: Describes a polygon having all congruent angles. 5. Regular: Describes a polygon that is both equilateral and equiangular. 6. Sum of the Interior Angles of a triangle: The sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180D .

7. Sum of the interior angles of any convex polygon: Is computed by finding the number of triangles that the polygon can be divided into using the diagonals from one vertex only and multiplying that by 180D . Formulas: If n represents the number of sides of any convex polygon, then The sum of the interior angles = (n 2) 180 The Sum of the Exterior angles = 360D (one per vertex)

8. For Regular Polygons only: Formulas for regular n-gons: The Measure of One Interior Angle =

(n 2) 180D n 360D n

The Measure of One Exterior Angle =

Remember: An exterior and interior angle are supplementary.

9. Tiling the Plane: If 3 or more polygons come together to share a single vertex, then the sum of the interior angles at that point must be 360D .

10. Regular Tessellations: A regular tessellation is a tiling (or tessellation) of the plane using all the same regular polygon. There are only 3 regular tessellations of the plane: Equilateral Triangles: (Interior angles are 60D each. 6 triangles meet at each vertex. Squares: (Interior angles are 90D each. 4 squares meet at each vertex. Regular hexagons: (Interior angles are 120D each. 3 hexagons meet at each vertex.
