Chapter 7 5

The document defines the Dirac delta function and provides examples of its Laplace transform. It then shows how to use the Laplace transform to solve initial value problems (IVPs) involving the Dirac delta function and unit step function. Two examples are worked out: 1) a first order differential equation with Dirac delta term and initial condition, and 2) a second order differential equation with both Dirac delta and unit step terms and initial conditions. Both examples are transformed using the Laplace transform, solved for Y(s), and then inverted back to the time domain using Laplace transform properties.

5 The Dirac Delta Function Definition:

The unit impulse:

(t t0 ) = lim a (t t0 )
a 0

is called the Dirac Delta Function. The Laplace transform of the Dirac Delta function is given by formula no. 26 :

L { (t t0 )} = e st0

Examples: (Dirac Delta Function)

L { (t 2)} = e s ( 2) = e2 s L { (t + 3)} = e s( 3) = e3s L { (t )} = e s ( 0) = 1 L { (t 2 )} = e s( 2 ) = e2 s

Solving IVPs using Laplace transform:

1)

y + y = (t 1);

y ( 0) = 2

Solution:

L { y } + L { y} = L { (t 1)} sY ( s ) y ( 0) + Y ( s ) = e s sY ( s ) 2 + Y ( s ) = e s sY ( s ) + Y ( s ) = 2 + e s ( s + 1)Y ( s ) = 2 + e s 2 e s Y (s) = + s +1 s +1

Solving IVPs using Laplace transform:

1)
