Superposition Questions and Problems

The document discusses superposition theorem and its applications in circuit analysis. It asks and answers 5 questions: 1) A negative response in superposition implies the current direction is opposite of when all sources are present. 2) For N independent sources, there are N individual responses that sum to give the overall response. 3) Dependent sources cannot be eliminated in superposition as their values rely on independent sources. 4) Superposition has limitations for nonlinear circuits with dependent sources. 5) It provides an example of using superposition to solve for the voltage Vx in a circuit with 3 independent sources.

GUIDE QUESTIONS

1. What does a negative response in superposition imply? In superposition, a negative response imply that the obtained direction of the current having a specific magnitude due to single source is opposite of the current direction, when all the sources are present. 2. How many responses are obtained from an N number of independent sources present in a given circuit? For N number of independent sources, there are also equivalent N numbers of responses. According to superposition theorem, each independent source produces its own individual response over the circuit. The algebraic sum of the individual responses is equal overall or linear response. 3. Is it possible to eliminate dependent sources on superposition? Dependent sources cannot be eliminated in superposition theorem. That is because, at different value of independent source, different parameters (e.g. current, voltage) can be calculated, where the magnitude of the dependent source rely on. By the application of the theorem, only independent sources must be eliminated, retaining the dependent sources. 4. What are the possible limitations of the superposition theorem? The basis of superposition theorem is the linearity principle. Thus, one limitation of the theorem is when the circuit is nonlinear. Meaning, dependent sources are present, where its magnitude depends on one of the independent sources. 5. Determine the voltage Vx using the superposition shown in the figure below.
