Electronics Club Handout: Resistance Colour Coding

The document provides information about an electronics club workshop on an optical obstacle sensor. It describes the components used in the circuit including a light dependent resistor (LDR) whose resistance decreases with light, a 555 timer circuit wired in monostable mode to prevent fluctuations in the LDR output, a 4029 counter whose outputs increase with each positive edge from the 555 timer, and a 7447 decoder and 7-segment display to convert and show the counter output. The circuit is designed to provide a digital high output when light falls on the LDR.

Light Dependent Resistor (LDR)

A light dependent resistor is an electronic component whose resistance decreases with increasing incident light intensity. Its resistance typically varies from a few kilo ohms to the order of 100 kilo ohms.

The given circuit gives a digital high at A when resistance of LDR is low, that is, light is falling on it. It gives a digital low otherwise. The value of the resistor R is decided according to the range of the LDR.

555 Timer

Circuit Diagram for monostable operation

A 555 IC is being used here in monostable mode to prevent any unwanted fluctuations in voltage at the LDR output (A) from affecting the circuit.

4029 Counter
The outputs O0 (least significant), O1 , O2 and O3(most significant) are binary outputs and increase by one whenever a positive edge at the CP(15th pin) is encountered. The 15th pin, CP, is the output of the 555 timer i.e. B.

7447 Decoder

Seven Segment Display

The 7447 decoder simply converts the four outputs of the 4029 into a form that can be displayed on the seven segment display.

The seven outputs from the 7447 are connected to the corresponding pins of the display.
