Chapter 3-Polynomial MDIS

The document discusses polynomials and their properties. It defines a polynomial as an equation with terms of increasing powers of x and constant coefficients. Some key properties are that the degree is the highest power of x and coefficients are constants. It provides examples of polynomials and covers topics like solving polynomial identities, long division of polynomials, the remainder and factor theorems, and factorizing polynomials.

Chapter 3 :

1. What is a polynomial ?

Polynomial

A polynomial is an equation of this form :

Properties : 1. The degree of the polynomial is the highest power of x 2. an , an 1,, a2, a1, a are known as coefficients and they are constants. Example 1.1 : (a) 2 x 3 3x 2 5x 6

(b) x 2 4 x 6

(c) 4 x 10

5. Factor Theorem : Factor Theorem states that : If a polynomial f x is divided by ax b and if the remainder is 0 OR

then

**

Examples : Given that f x 2 x 4 7 x 3 2 x 2 13x 6 (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) Show that one of them 2 x 1 or 2 x 1 is a factor of f x Show that f x is divisible by x 1 but not x Show that x 2 5x 6 is a factor of f x Factorize f x completely and hence solve f x 2 x 1

Solution :

2.

3.

4. For each linear polynomial, we find out remainder.of f x when divided by it

5. If the remainder is zero then by Factor Theorem, the linear polynomial is a factor.

6. We can use Long Division to find the other remaining quadratic factor.

7. Factorize the quadratic factor possible without using the formula.
