The Teaching of Writing Process Approach

The teaching of writing process approach focuses on writing as a process with multiple stages. It involves students discussing ideas, creating a draft or outline, further discussion, and then writing a detailed account. The approach emphasizes classroom activities like brainstorming and group discussion to promote language development. There are typically four stages: pre-writing where topics are selected and ideas organized; writing a draft individually or in groups; revising based on feedback to improve the writing; and a final evaluation of the work by the teacher.

The Teaching Of Writing Process Approach

Kilfoil & Der Walt (1997:252) look this approach as a process in which student are given time to think about and discuss their ideas on a specific topic, write a draft or framework of what they want to say, discuss this again and then to write a detailed account.

Process approaches to writing tend to focus more on the varied classroom activities which promote the development of language use like brainstorming, group discussion or re-writing.

Four common stages in this approach are:-

1. Stage 1 Pre writing Selecting a topic and planning what to say Generating ideas by brainstorming and discussion Organizing ideas into a mind map or linear form

2. Stage 2 Writing Putting a draft version on paper Can be done individually, in pairs or in group

3. Stage 3 Revising

Making changes to improve the writing Drafts are returned and improvements are made based upon feedback

4. Stage 4 Evaluation Assessing the written work Final version of the work is ready Teacher evaluates students work
