Start Date: January 2013
An International Course for Participatory Researchers: Practitioners, Community Members and Academics
Duration: Six day course spread over 12 months Designed for: Practitioner and academic researchers, citizens involved in research for social change and postgraduate students. Participatory forms of research are increasingly common in the fields of health, social welfare, and education, but there are few opportunities for shared learning about this approach. The four contributing institutions, listed below, will host a course, presented in their local language, that will enable participants to: Be familiar with the origins of participatory social research in their own country and internationally. Be confident of the defining characteristics of participatory social research and the underlying theories and concepts that inform this approach. Design and implement a participatory research project within their own field of interest. Interpret critically the findings of participatory research projects for application in their field of interest. Consider and identify impact and sustainability issues. Participants will apply to their chosen institution with an idea for a participatory research project which will be undertaken over the course of the year. There will be six full day sessions where we will work collaboratively to develop understandings of the principles and practices of PSR and to address practical issues. The six days will take place at your chosen institution. To foster international communication and collaboration alongside local application, there will be opportunities for on-going contact with course participants in the other countries via web links. Participants will also be encouraged and supported to present work on the internet platform and at the International CARN Conference in November 20131.
